Difference between Lactic acid fermentation and Butyric acid fermentation

Lactic acid fermentation                                                               Butyric acid fermentation.

The end product is lactic acid, ethanol                     The end product of fermentation is butyric acid,
and CO2.                                                                   CO2 nad H2.

The pathway follows reaction of EMP                     The pathway follows reactions of EMP pathway
pathway and the enzyme used is phosphoketolase.   and the enzyme used is pyruvate oxidoreductase.

The yield of ATP is 2 mol/glucose in homofer         ATP yeild is 3 mol/glucose molecule.
mentative pathway and 1mol/glucose in
heterofermentative pathway.

The key enzyme involved is phosphotrans-             The pathway involves the enzyme phosphotrans-
acetylase and the intermediate is acetyl PO4.          butyrylase and the intermediate butyryl PO4.

Their is no specific involvement of thiolase,           The pathway utilizes thiolase and protonase.
protonase, etc.

eg:
Lactobacillus acidophilus.                                       Clostridium butyricum.
Lactobacillus planctarum.                                       Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens.

Hope this helps.
High six.
