Presentation of non peptide antigens

Hello immigos...Got the joke??

Shut up with your lame liners that you claim as jokes..

:( You're mean.

Anyways So let's introduce the topic for today's discussion which is already in the title, Non proteinic antigens. Come on, let's agree we are so much sunk into peptide antigens, their pathways, presentation on MHC molecules, etc etc. that we hardly realize that the world and the antigens exists beyond them too.

Non peptide or non proteinic antigens are basically anything from a lipid molecule to any foreign antigen like thermocol etc. Such antigens are not presented by MHC molecules Zzzingg.

So who does it??
Na na, don't worry. The answer is here :D
T cell receptors and CD1 family.

There are reports dating back to the 1980s of T cell proliferation in the presence of nonprotein antigens derived from infectious agents. More specifically said it's  gamma delta TCR (Sorry guys there was no way to add the symbol :p) are responsible for expression of non-proteinic antigens. These receptors have two amigos, I mean immigos that help it in the expression. They are CD1 family and class 1 molecules, more specifically beta 2 Microglobulin, which immitate the action of MHC Class 1 molecules. THe genes for this are present on chromosome 1. Group 1 includes CD1A, B, C, and E; CD1D is in group 2. All mammalian species studied have CD1 genes, although the number varies. Expression of CD1 molecules varies according to subset

CD1D1 genes are expressed mainly in nonprofessional APCs and on certain B-cell subsets. The CD1A, B, and C genes are expressed on immature thymocytes and professional APCs, mainly those of the dendritic type. CD1C gene expression is seen on B cells, whereas the CD1A and B products are not.

I have tried to explain it more simply by my notes too.

Hope it doesn't gets confusing and helps you to understand.
Let's finish the discussion with our signature high six. Tadaa.
-Staph :D
