Differences between batch and continuous sterlization.

Hello amazing Microbiologists.
I hope you all are doing your best.
In an attempt to better the best, today we will be discussing differences between batch and continuous sterilization. I will try covering as many points as I can....till I mess up.
Let's go.

What is  batch sterilization?
Fermentation medium is sterilized here in a batch process. ie. the entire quantity of the medium is sterilized in a separate fermenter or mash cooker, and then the entire sterilized medium is aseptically transferred into the actual fermenter where the fermentation is supposed to be carried out.

What is continuous sterilization?
In continuous process, the fermentation medium is passed through the heating coil, where the medium is heated to sterilization temperature for a holding period and then immediately cooled down to the fermentation temperature. Holding period depends upon the length of the coil.

What type of medias can be sterilized by both the processes?
Continuous process is mostly used for sterilizing medias which are liquid and less viscous. Whereas it is easier to use the batch process for sterilizing medias with more solid content.

How are both the processes controlled?
Continuous processes are automatically controlled and batch processes require manual control.

Nutritional losses?
Nutritional losses are more in batch process as compared to the continuous process. The main reason being - exposure to high temperatures for longer time. In continuous process the media is heated, sterilized and cooled with a matter of seconds and hence the nutritional losses are low.

Time duration?
Continuous system has a lower sterilization period because it sterilizes small quantities of medium in the heating coil due to which the heating temperature is reached quickly. Batch system requires more time because the heating and the subsequent cooling of the medium is slow.

Cost effective?
Batch system is comparatively cheaper than the continuous system.

That's all.
I hope this helps you guys :D
High Six and lots of love.
